Accreditation by the French Ministry of Education certifies that the teaching provided by the International School of Boston complies with the French education system's demands, curricula, teaching objectives, and organizational rules. The French school system was founded on general principles inspired by the 1789 revolution, such as academic freedom, neutrality, inclusion, or secularism (laïcité). All students from accredited schools can pursue their education in another French school without taking an entry examination. Schools must periodically prove that they meet accreditation criteria (acceptance of French and foreign nationals, preparation for French examinations, employment of qualified French staff).

The Agency for French Education Abroad (AEFE) is a government institution supervised by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Founded in 1990, it is responsible for monitoring and managing the network of French schools abroad. The AEFE is the guarantor of the French education system abroad. It plays a key role in expanding France’s cultural and linguistic influence throughout the world and boosts the appeal of French higher education. Membership in AEFE provides ISB students with numerous professional development and co-curricular opportunities.

The Association of the French Schools in North America (AFSA) is a membership organization of elementary and secondary schools in the United States and Canada, all accredited by the French Ministry of Education. The official French curriculum taught in these schools is enriched by aspects of North American culture and educational practice, as well as by the mastery of English spoken in the United States and Canada. AFSA’s member schools educate bilingual, bicultural students whose academic excellence prepares them to enter the finest European and North American universities. There are currently 60 AFSA schools throughout the U.S. and Canada.
