ISB's Dual Language Program

The International School of Boston offers a two-way dual language program that fosters academic excellence in both French and English.

There are many types of bilingual programs. A dual language program is a specific form of a bilingual program.  Research has shown dual  language programs to be the most effective of all bilingual programs.

In a dual language program, two languages of instruction are equal in value. At ISB we demonstrate value toward multilingualism as we celebrate and build upon our international faculty and student body. As a result we are working in an bilingual environment which allows students to add new languages to their knowledge base, rather than replace one language with another.

In our dual language program all students are provided with ample opportunities to learn and be exposed to both languages of instruction allowing them to progress in the language while gaining an appreciation of another culture.

The following goals are embedded within our dual language program:
  • To develop high levels of academic proficiency in French and English
  • To develop students who are bilingual, bi-literate, and bicultural
  • To develop the ability to see a problem from differing viewpoints
  • To gain an appreciation and understanding of different cultures
  • To enhance student self-esteem and identity development
The following concepts are essential to our dual language program:
  • ISB teachers provide language support in both French and English
  • ISB teachers serve as bilingual models and work in team-teaching structures
  • Heterogeneous language grouping allows students to learn from their peers
  • Language is taught throughout the curriculum  and not solely in language arts classes
  • Language is learned through content therefore developing academic vocabulary and proficiency
