Model United Nations

Assuming the role of ambassadors in authentic simulations of the deliberations of U.N. members, students in this course gain a unique opportunity to employ their understanding of global citizenship. Through interactive learning, they acquire and refine skills of public speaking, consensus-building, negotiation, and research as they investigate multilateral issues from the perspective of different nations.

MODEL UN team wins best delegation award
from the June 2009 issue of ISB NEWS

On Friday, May 15 and Saturday, May 16, 4 students from ISB went to Northeastern University's "Model UN" conference. They were representing North Korea on a different range of topics, basically taking the stance of a hard line communist country with a strong leader and a deep faith in their policies. Their representation of this country, Jillian Q. and Calum B. (11th grade IB), won the best delegation award! Farrah R. and Emma S. (9th grade IP) also enjoyed the experience while receiving the respect of their fellow delegates for their strong positions and knowledge of the topic.

Their next challenge will be a four-day conference at Harvard University in January 2010. This will allow plenty of time for them to prepare and to find more delegates as they need a bigger team to be able to participate.
In the meantime, many thanks to their parents for their help, and especially to Marina Simmons and Sharon Quigley who volunteered to supervise them during part of this conference and the previous one.
