Arts

"Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time." Thomas Merton

The Arts Department at the International School of Boston is made up of the visual arts and performing arts (music and drama). These programs are a rich component in the lives of our students in all divisions of the school. The arts provide an arena for the students to express themselves in a creative manner and to build their personal confidence. The performing arts provide another venue for strengthening their bilingual skills. Through the arts, students refine skills such as those related to listening and observation that are learned in other disciplines. Additionally they gain an appreciation of the arts, a respect for other cultures and a better understanding of themselves and the world around them.

The arts are also an important part of our after-school program where many different opportunities to explore one's creative side are offered. These very popular clubs allow students to delve into their specific areas of interest.

The arts curriculum from the Maternelle through the upper school is woven into the program in an interdisciplinary manner. In addition to enhancing and delivering this curriculum to the students, the Arts Department works on showcasing what the students have learned and created. Student work can be seen throughout the hallways, in the classrooms and even on the playground as well as through planned exhibits and performances that take place on and off campus.

"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up." Pablo Picasso
